A latest discovery shows two pre-salt layer oil fields in Santos basin waters being explored by Brazil's state-owned oil and gas giant Petrobras may be connected, local media reported Wednesday.
There is a big chance one oil field, informally called Iara, is actually a part of the Tupi mega-field, Petrobras' latest tests suggests. The oil field Tupi was discovered in July 2006 with an estimated capacity of 5 billion to 8 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
Petrobras plans to make a seismic analysis of the area where the two fields are located to see whether they are connected.
If Tupi and Iara are proven to be in the same field, Petrobras will continue its exploitation there and do not need to change the chronogram of exploitation.
The company plans to start its long-term tests in the area in March 2009.
