Hyundai Motor Co. said Tuesday it has started to produce commercial cars at its second engine plant in India, to expand small-car sales in one of the world's fastest-growing auto markets.
Hyundai, the world's sixth-largest automaker, said that the company aims to make its India plants as the global hub for its compact car production.
The new production facility would raise the company's engine production capacity in India from 320,000 to 570,000 units, the company said.
Hyundai completed its second plant in the city of Chennai this February.
"With the new second engine plant, we will reinforce our role in Hyundai's drive for small cars," said Lim Heung-soo, head of Hyundai Motor India Ltd. The engines will be equipped in Hyundai's small-car lineup such as the i10 and i30 compact cars, Lim added.
According to Hyundai, the Chennai plant doubled Hyundai's total production capacity to 600,000 units a year.
Rising incomes of middle-class people in India are boosting car sales, the company said.
