The biggest Bronze Age settlement ever found in the Netherlands has been uncovered during road construction in the south of the country, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Friday.
The site was found at the A50/A58 junction north of the city of Eindhoven. Almost four hectares have been excavated, revealing the remains of 19 farms and over 50 ancillary buildings, ANP reported.
The Bronze Age ran from 1500 to 850 BC. The only similar settlements of this size in the Netherlands found so far are in the northern province of Drenthe.
Archaeologists said the regulated distances between the farms suggest the settlement was built according to a proper plan. The site also includes two burial mounds and a cremation area.
Archaeologists have a few months to continue excavations but the site will not be preserved for prosperity and the traffic junction is scheduled for completion at the end of next year, cityarchaeologist Nico Arts said.
